Challah Bread

Challah Bread is a beautiful braided bread that everyone can make. Challah bread is traditionally served for Sabbath and Jewish holidays, but anyone can make it and enjoy it.

Serving and Storage

Store Challah bread in air tight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. To freeze Challah bread wrap in plastic warp and place in freezer for 2-3 months. You can freeze slices or the whole loaf. Before serving the bread allow to cool on wire rack until slightly warm.

Challah Bread Recipe

Prep Time 150 minutes             Servings 32 servings
Cook Time 30 minutes             Yield 2 loaves
Total Time 180 minutes            Skill level  medium-hard

Ingredients

 
  • 2 packages active dry yeast (1/4 ounce each)

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 1/2 cup canola oil

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 eggs

  • 6-6 1/2 cups all purpose flour

Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg

  • 2 teaspoon water

Directions

 

Step 1: Prepare yeast:

In a medium mixing bowl mix together warm water and yeast. Stir yeast into warm water so that the yeast is fully dissolved.

Step 2: Mix in the rest of the ingredients:

Add oil, sugar, eggs, and 5 cups of flour to the yeast and warm water. Mix ingredients together until dough thickens. Turn dough onto floured surface and knead until smooth for 6-8 minutes. Place dough into greased bowl, grease the top of the dough as well. Cover dough with cloth and let sit for an hour to rise.

Step 3: Divide and shape dough:

Place dough on a floured surface. Divide dough in half than divide the halves into thirds. Roll each piece of dough into a 15 inch rope. Place three ropes on a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Braid the dough and pinch the ends and tuck under. Repeat with the other half of the dough. Cover the bread and let rise for an hour.

Step 4: Egg wash and baking:

Wisk the egg and the water together until fully combined. Brush the egg wash over the braids. Place the bread in to a 350 degrees F oven for 30-33 minutes or until golden brown. Let bread cool on wire racks.
